How Do I Find A Pet?

Congratulations! You’ve decided to get a pet! But before you go running out the door to bring your new friend home you need to decide where you’ll get your pet from. That tiny detail may not seem that important but trust us, it is!

Here are your choices:

Animal Shelters – These locations provide temporary homes for strays and surrendered or abandoned pets. Most often, you will find only cats and dogs here. They are typically kept until reclaimed, adopted, or placed in another location. Unfortunately, the truth is most shelters, due to low resources and overcapacity of animals, are forced to euthanize. Most covers are selective regarding which animals become euthanized, including unhealthy, ill-mannered, and “unadoptable” pets. Since these shelters are governmentally and privately owned, only a few can afford to be “no-kill” shelters, however, even on some occasions, they have no choice but to euthanize.

Breeder – This is an excellent way to get yourself a well-bred and healthy pet, but only if you find a responsible breeder. A worthy breeder carefully selects parents to minimize any issues with the pups. Poor breeders are only in it for the money and do not consider the advancement of breeds. A respectable breeder should offer you offspring with the latest physical and mental health. Another good reason for getting your new pet from a breeder is that you get the unique opportunity to interact with the pet’s family, giving you the first impression of what your future pet will be like. Most breeders give you the assurance that you can call them at any stage in your pet’s life so that may help you understand or cope with any problems that arise. Visit as many breeders as you can and inspect the locations to ensure the animals are clean and well-maintained.

Pet Stores – Pet stores are a place where you can get a number of animals from dogs, cats, and birds to rabbits reptiles, fish, and rodents. These animals are not born and raised in the store, they are only there to be sold. While this could be an easy satisfying way to get your pets, some critics argue that sometimes the condition in which these animals are obtained, maintained, and then sold is problematic. Some stores do not properly train their employees in handling animals and this results in an ill-mannered pet that will eventually get abandoned. Some stores don’t screen potential buyers and risk the pets being adopted by an unstable possibly damaging home. This however is not true of all stores. Reputable stores do their research on where to purchase their animals, how to appropriately handle them while they are in their store, and they conduct a screening of potential buyers before selling a pet to ensure a safe home. (A large majority of people get their pets from pet stores, consequently, millions of these pets end up in shelters and abandoned. The reason being they get sick or for any reason no longer are wanted. The best way to avoid this cycle is by educating current and potential pet owners about the lifelong commitment of being a pet owner. Spreading awareness of the number of animals awaiting a new home in the shelters, and the poor conditions of pet shops could also help make a difference. Some pet stores get their animals from commercial breeders, the same breeders that cosmetic company get their animals from.)

Rescue Agency – These amazing places are a wonderful option for families to get a pet that will be truly grateful to of found a new home. These animals have been lost or abandoned. Some even have had the unfortunate circumstance of losing their owners to death or illnesses. With rescue animals, you may not know their history but you can be sure that they have been thoroughly screened for their health and temperament. Most of these animals are already housebroken. Rescue agencies offer a sanctuary for animals and shelters provide veterinary care, spay/neuter, a temporary foster home not a kennel, and placement into a lifelong loving home.
